Sins of The Fathers

“The fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children’s teeth are set on edge” Ez. 18:2
When the prophet said these words it was during a time of judgment and cleansing of the nation of Israel, God’s covenant people. Just as now some people thought it was unwarranted and some thought it was unfair that a whole nation should suffer for the sins of some or in this case most of the people. We could look at our own nation in this light and see that the whole nation is suffering because of what others have done, even things done in the past. The wrongs we do in fact do affect others.
My father used to tell me, “Don’t do as I do, do as I say.” But, I didn’t get the message. A lot of effort is made to teach us what we may call the good way. But the way we teach will never be followed without good examples of that way’s fruit. Scripture says, “Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God, whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.” Hebrews 13:7
Paul said to follow Him for he followed Christ and that his life and those working with him were the examples. Phil. 3:17
Likewise there are men and women in the church that teach others but do not do as they teach. There are many that do right and I commend them and do not mean to diminish them or their lives in any way. But I have heard of some deacons of a church that bragged about their ability to drink beer and whiskey. They spoke of knowing Christ but then cursed like drunken sailors. I ask you, which are people going to notice the most, their words or their actions?
In Israel the whole nation was judged at the same time. I am glad I don’t have to be judged for the actions of the deacons or others like them.
The prophet spoke of the change coming in God’s judgment system, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (Ez. 18:4) This says to us that we are responsible as individuals to God. I am not guilty of another’s sin unless I commit the same sins. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death.
It is very important for us to watch who we follow as role models and leaders in our lives. But at the same time understand that God’s grace and forgiveness is available for anyone that sins.
In some cases the sins of the fathers are followed by the children and get worse with each passing generation. Likewise sickness and disease are passed on to the children, etc. Addictions and habits grow stronger in future generations than they were in the past. This is one of the biggest reasons we have so much sin and darkness in this country and in the world. In generations past the gospel didn’t get to the people of the nation and the world. When sin is left alone it will grow. But when the gospel comes to a person, then it will grow and we will see whole families be changed by the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Part 2
I have seen this many times over the years, that when one person gets born again, others in the family get born again too! Praise God, this has been true in my own family!
Maybe you have followed a relative or someone else that’s taught you to do things that are not right. Maybe you didn’t even realize they were wrong but now they are taking their toll on you and your life is not what it should be or what you wanted it to be.
People often times think there is no way out or no hope for them. Maybe you have been in a bad way for so long that you think that’s the way you have to be or maybe even supposed to be. But, that is not true! You can break free and become new in Jesus Christ!
Jesus said it is the thief that comes only to steal, kill and destroy, but I am come that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly. ( John 10:10)
Just think of all the time, energy, resources and health you are giving to the wages of sin. Think of what you once wanted to be in life, the dreams you had of what life should be like. Think of the relationships that you should have instead of what you have now. Nothing last, everything goes away. No one stays in your life, except to take away from you.
Christ is standing at your hearts door knocking, ready to take you from all sin, guilt, shame, and give you His life, freedom, joy, peace, restoration and on and on it goes! Eternal life to come, abundant life now and through you begin to make the future brighter and better for your family and those around you!
No matter who or what has come and been the control of your life, all can change new! For whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13 If any body be in Christ they are a new creature old things are passed away, behold all things are become new. (II Cor. 5:17)
