Best Love

Best Love
John the beloved as he is often called, wrote about the love of God more than any of the other gospel writers. In his last years, he wrote the epistle known as 1 John where he tells us ll the ways by which we can know for certain that we have entered into eternal life. The greatest of these is by the love we have for God and one another.
In chapter two he reminds the reader that their sins have been forgiven and that they have overcome the wicked one. Then in verses fifteen through seventeen he tells us to not love the world neither the things that are in the world for they will all pass away but if we do the will of the father we will abide forever. But now look at this amazing statement: "If any man love the world the love of the father is not in him." (v 15b).
He makes a distinct contrast between the love of the world and the love of the Father. Almost all of you reading this will know of the love chapter in the Bible (1 Corinthians 13). Though we know this scripture and we agree it's the right way, I have never seen or known anyone that lives that kind of love. I think most people think that it's unattainable or that God really doesn't want or expect us to live that way. He probably just put that there to help keep us on our toes but doesn't expect us to do it. Yet his word in Romans five says His love has been shed abroad in our hearts by his Holy Ghost. If it is in us If it is in us then we can live it.
Sad to say, but I have seen more people give more love and affection to pets and teddy bears than to people or God. Affection is part of our makeup and it will come out of us in some form. If not toward God, it will be toward something in this world. Without God, our affection will run wild. It will go to various lovers, pets, things or just to the world in general.
But with God our affection can and should be directed to the correct place .
There is only one true, real love in this universe. That is God! God is Love! Note that the scripture does not say love is what God does, it says love is what He is. That's why He has since the beginning of time sought to have fellowship with mankind. He is love and love must be shared. It's his nature just as it is supposed to be our nature if we are truly born again. His love is given out, not to the worthy for there are none, but rather in grace. It's the kind that cannot be held in. For God so loved, that He gave!!
I think that many people see the scripture we've shared today as a command. When viewed this way the old man immediately tries to resurrect, to resist and defend it's right of choice. But if we can see that the same scriptures tell us that this present evil world is what we've been delivered from and that we are not of this world, though we be in it, then God is not giving us a command but a warning. Stay clear of the thing that once held you captive. You've been delivered, forgiven, and have overcome, so don't let it get your heart again. Soon it will be all gone but you will remain forever.
Before one cannot love, one must love what or who is best first! Jesus said love God, love your neighbor, love one another. Everything else is built on these. If we set our affection on Jesus Christ and things above instead of the world and the things in it, then we will have loved the Best and love for everything else will simply fade away.
Once you've had the Best, you have no room for the rest!
